TurboTax users beware! That email asking you to take a look at your W-2 may be fake.
People who use TurboTax do receive legitimate emails from the online tax service. And that’s part of the problem.
Scammers are sending a flurry of fake emails too… and not just for Turbo Tax users. Almost any financial institution or business can be a target. And those scammers are putting in extra efforts to make those emails look real.
They are getting more and more sophisticated – spoofing email addresses and forging legitimate websites. They are using the company’s colors and logo. They copy the web design of the site they are impersonating. They’re including personal information in their emails whenever possible. They’re asking you to do things that don’t seem unreasonable.
It’s getting really, really hard to tell what is real and what is fake.
Scammers want you to click on a malicious link and give up your personal information. So, they are using all the tricks they can to get you to take the bait. They may use a hook such as asking you to confirm your identity or your bank account. They may even warn that you’ll be blocked from your account if you don’t.
Who knows what the next one will be?
Unfortunately, there is no end in sight for the scams.
Phishing scams – fake emails that look like they come from someone you do business with – are still going strong.
As long as scammers can dream up another way to get victims to part with their money, it will go on.
Scammers no longer have to waste 20 minutes at a time on the phone with one potential victim. With the click of a button, it’s easier than ever to put out a line to thousands to see how much they can reel in.
